   Ultrasound

  What is Ultrasound?

.

Ultrasound is the use of sound waves to produce an image of internal structures. The sound is transmitted and received by a transducer that rests on the skin. After many years of clinical studies, no harmful effects from low-intensity ultrasound have been discovered.

Ultrasound is painless. A  gel is applied to the skin and the transducer is moved over the skin  surface.

Occasionally, you may feel a slight pressure when the transducer is angled in an unusual position. Sometimes when evaluating a female patient it is necessary to place the transducer inside the vagina. Most women do not experience any discomfort.

  Who will Perform the Exam?

At DRA Imaging, P.C., all ultrasound exams are performed by a Diagnostic Ultrasonographer, who has been trained exclusively in the field of ultrasound and has been certified with the ARDMS (American Registry Diagnostic Medical Society).

When Should I have an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is frequently used in determining the due date during pregnancy, evaluating fetal growth and movement, examining breast nodules and viewing thyroid, abdominal and pelvic structures. Ultrasound exams are also used to evaluate blood flow and cardiac function. Your physician determines if there is a clinical indication for Ultrasound.

 Ultrasound Guided Biopsy

In addition to conventional diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound also provides the ability to offer image guided biopsies into certain nodules or cysts.

Using sterile technique with ultrasound guidance, a nodule can be further evaluated.  A sample (s) of the nodule will be obtained when the nodule is solid or, in the case of a fluid filled cyst, fluid will be extracted from the nodule.

The area will be anesthetized and a needle will be inserted through the surface of the skin into the area of concern.  Multiple samples will be taken of the nodule and sent to a laboratory for analysis.   If the nodule is fluid filled the fluid will be drained and also sent for analysis.

Image guided biopsy offers the opportunity for a less invasive procedure from surgery with diagnostic results.

What are the Preparations for the Exam?

There are various preparations for specific exams, please check with our office when scheduling your appointment.

When Will My Physician Know the Results?

Upon completion of the exam, a board certified radiologist will interpret the exam. A report will be sent to your physician.  All reports are also available by fax or immediately by phone when requested by your physician.
