CT Coronary Angiography (CCTA) & CalciumCat Scan

These relatively new tests for arterial blockages are made possible by today‘s much faster CT scanners. In the past, the only non-invasive tests were treadmill and nuclear assessments. And the only way to take a direct look was through invasive cardiac catheterization. Today, DRA Imaging offers a new generation of CT scanners. Today, the 64 slice CT scanner provides 3D visualization of the internal aspect of the coronary arteries. It is a non-invasive procedure that allows radiologists to gather images of these arteries never before possible with CT.

Calcium Scoring

CT can also be used to help physicians measure the amount of calcium in the wall of coronary arteries to help predict the risk of heart attacks and cardiac death. The extent of calcium viewed can help doctors decide how aggressively to treat a patient's risk factors for heart disease.

How is a CCTA Performed?
  • The technologist will place you on the CT examination table, lying flat on your back. Because movement can interfere with obtaining a clear image, straps and pillows are sometimes used to help you maintain the correct position and hold you still.
  • Small metal discs called ”electrodes“ are attached to your chest and to an ECG (electrocardiograph) machine that records the electrical activity of the heart. The ECG makes it possible to record CT scans when the heart is not actively contracting.
  • The table that you are lying on first moves quickly through the scanner to determine the correct starting point for the scans. Next, the table moves more slowly as the actual CT scan takes place.
  • In some instances, you may be asked to hold your breath while images are recorded.
  • The entire procedure including CT scanning usually takes about 10 minutes.
Pregnancy Policy:

All patients of childbearing age (10 - 54) will be required to sign that there is No Chance of Pregnancy prior to an imaging exam being performed (Exception: - Ultrasound). If there is a chance of pregnancy, STAT blood work will be ordered prior to the procedure being performed to establish that there is no chance of pregnancy.

In the event, you are pregnant and the exam is deemed necessary by your physician, you will be shielded and monitored with a radiation badge.
