EVLT
Treatment (for Varicose Veins)
Endo-Venous Laser Treatment
EVLT is a minimally invasive laser
procedure that treats the pain and discomfort of varicose veins. EVLT
leaves no scar and can be performed at DRA Imaging. The treatment takes
about one hour.
Am I a candidate for an EVLT Treatment?
Some typical symptoms you might be experiencing
can be:
| |
Pain |
Aching |
Throbbing |
| |
Itching |
Burning sensation |
Cramping |
| |
Fatigue |
Swelling |
Leg Ulcers |
| |
Heaviness |
Unsightly varicose veins |

DRA Imaging is the Hudson Valley's leader in EVLT treatment for varicose
veins. Because of our experience and expertise, DRA Imaging has been designated
an EVLT physician training site for doctors from the entire northeast. DRA
Physicans are Board Certified in Interventional Radiology specializing
in minimally invasive treatments. |

What Happens During the EVLT
Procedure? |
The doctor will use ultrasound to
view the varicose veins. A local anesthetic is then applied and under
Ultrasound guidance, the physician will insert the small laser catheter
through
a tiny entry point, usually near the knee. Laser energy is then
delivered to seal the faulty vein thus forcing the blood flow into
healthy surrounding veins.
Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged.
You will be instructed to avoid rigorous activities, such as gym
workouts, for 2 weeks.
Normal daily activity can then be
resumed. The area may be tender. Localized bruising is normal. Any
discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter non-aspirin pain
relievers as needed. You may not fly for one week after the EVLT. |
How does the EVLT work?
The laser energy damages the vein walls,
shrinking them and closing the faulty vein so that the blood cannot flow
through it. This eliminates vein bulging at its source.
Is loss of this vein a problem?
No. After treatment, the blood
in the faulty veins will be diverted to the many normal veins in the
leg.
What are the complications of
this procedure?
The only minimal complications experienced with
EVLT have been a small number of cases of numbness that (usually) passes quickly.
Am I at risk from the laser?
No. Just as a precaution against accidental
firing of the laser energy outside the body, you will be given a pair of
special glasses to protect your eyes.
Will my insurance cover this
procedure?
Most major insurances now cover EVLT.

Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a very popular way
to eliminate spider and varicose veins. A sclerosing solution is
injected into the vein causing collapse of the vein. This results in
fading or disappearance of the vein.
Please speak with our vein center
nurse if you are on blood thinners, birth control, hormones or vitamins.
You will be asked to change into a
patient gown , remove all jewelry and wear a support stocking following
the procedure for 48 hours. After the first 48 hours, you will be
instructed to wear the support stockings during the day for 3 weeks.
This will assist in the completion process. |
What Happens During the
Sclerotherapy Procedure?
The doctor will inject a solution
into the faulty vein thus causing it to close. This procedure is
repeated into each of the affected areas. The number of treatments vary
from patient to patient depending upon the extent of the problem.
Each treatment is about 20 minutes
in length and is spaced 30 days apart to allow the healing process to
take place in the interim. You may not fly for 2 days after the
procedure. |
